We have all seen 4th Street Live. We’ve all been told of the “hip” happenings of Bardstown Road. We have all visited the Science Center, the Louisville Slugger Museum, Actors Theatre, the Louisville Zoo, and Churchill Downs.
But what is seldom remembered is that right down the block from Trinity, a busy Frankfort Avenue flashes with wonderful cafes, elegant restaurants, beautiful parks and a variety of shops that entertain crowds of people every day.
My journey down this bustling Louisville boulevard brought me to two unique places. First, I enjoyed a delightful snack at Nancy’s Bagel Grounds, located at 2101 Frankfort Avenue. A stylish, café-style restaurant, Nancy’s offers a pleasant, trendy atmosphere with a unique menu.
As indicated by the name, Nancy’s bagels are some of the best in town. Ranging from plain to pumpernickel to tomato herb, the bagels are the highlight of the menu. I fully enjoyed a turkey bagel sandwich, along with fresh homemade oatmeal.
Hospitable servers, modern architecture, and a modish atmosphere make Nancy’s a wonderful place to kick back and enjoy an afternoon snack.
My next stop was a small, corner bistro known as Café Glacé.
Off the beaten path, this quiet, classy, romantic café is perfect for bringing a young lady on a date. Owned and operated by one man, Café Glacé offers a café-style menu with a large variety of authentic Italian treats.
Known for its gelato, or Italian ice cream, Café Glacé also offers fresh, made-from-scratch panini sandwiches, soups, and many delicious Italian cakes and deserts. Modern artwork and décor create a wonderful atmosphere that sets Café Glacé apart from the rest.
These two cafés are only a small slice of the Frankfort Avenue treat.
Jorden Schroeder, who frequents Frankfort Avenue said, “I like the diversity of the shops, and I also like the comfortable atmosphere of the entire street.”
This seemingly forgotten area of town is home to many fun and entertaining places. “People should go to Frankfort Avenue more because it has a lot of hidden surprises,” Schroeder said.
So when you can’t find anything to do or any place to go, remember, Frankfort Avenue is right down the road.
