The freshman boys’ and girls’ basketball teams played Warren in a double header, in the Rod Oldham Athletic Center, Thursday Jan. 19.
The girls pulled out a thrilling victory 59-32 over the Warriors and now stand at 13-2, while the boys lost 72-58 and hold a record of 5-7.
The girls started out hot and stayed hot throughout the game, defensively and offensively. The team held strong defensively, only allowing a combined nine points in two of the four quarters: three in the first quarter and six in the third quarter. “It was a momentum boost to keep them at a low score,” Hannah Cothern said. “It kept the coach proud of us.”
The boys couldn’t stop Warren’s big man Michael Hall from scoring 25 points to lead Warren to a victory. The boys had three players in double digits with Brendan Schwendeman scoring 18, Nash Darnold with 13 and Logan Fryfogle with 12, but according to Schweneman it just wasn’t enough. “It’s good to have three double-digit scorers but I’d rather have the win,” Schwendeman said.
Leading scoring for the girls’ team was Cothern with 17 points; she also added three assists. “It was a good confidence boost for me,” Cothern said. “I helped the team get a big win.”
Zoe Merrill also scored in double digits with 10 points. “It’s always a great feeling knowing I helped out the team in any game,” Merrill said. “Especially in games against one of our rivals.”
The boys play Brooke Jan. 28 and 30 as a part of the triple-header games with the JV and varsity teams. The girls will play their final regular season game Jan. 30 at Morgantown. “We have been practicing hard and getting our mindset for the tournament so we can come out ready to win.”
The MOV freshman girls’ basketball tournament will start after the final regular season game. Times and dates are TBD.
