Imagine a future full of computers; a place where pencils and paper are almost as rare as tabletop jukeboxes. The average person works with handhelds, Smartphones and computers all day and that’s socially acceptable—smiled upon, even. That future may not be as far away as it seems.

Desktop publishing, a class that was previously taught by Mrs. Nancy Russell and now by Mrs. Kim Braun, is a class that uses computers every day to prepare students for life after schooling. “There are very few jobs that don’t actually have some type of technology,” Braun said. “We need to prepare our students for the outside world.”

Some students say they enjoy this way of learning as opposed to learning by studying with books. “You can apply it as soon as you learn it,” senior Cody Lewis said. “I think this class is better by applying it.”

Despite the computers providing students with the opportunity to prepare themselves, the technology used is not as recent. “I think [Desktop Publishing] has a lot of good purposes,” Braun said. “It would be nice if we were using updated software. This stuff is too old.”

No matter the age of the software, students and teachers alike say they enjoy learning with computers. “I like learning out of computers,” junior Malari Davis said. “I think, in a way, technology is taking over, and we’re giving a lot of responsibility to technology.”
