Anyone can enjoy a good Disney movie every once in a while. “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” starring Nicolas Cage and Jay Baruchel, is a perfect movie for all ages.
Hoping to end his battles against evil, sorcerer Balthazar Blake (Cage) stumbles upon the average teenager Dave Stutler (Baruchel) and hopes that Dave can help him win his battle. Balthazar learns that Dave is not only a physics nerd at New York University, but is also the Prime Merlinian, a very powerful sorcerer. Dave then learns for the first time about his abilities and that he is destined to fight off Maxim Horvath, Balthazar’s archenemy.
Hoping to strengthen Dave’s powers, Balthazar spends time training him. Like all teenagers, Dave goes through times when he doesn’t want to listen, putting both of them behind in their conditioning for what’s to come. When the time sneaks up on him, Balthazar puts his life in Dave’s hands and begins the fight against evil.
This movie is a spin off of “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” portion of Disney’s “Fantasia,” with one scene in particular that resembles “Fantasia.” Although the plot is at times a little flaky, it is a great family movie. The action and special effects really make it jump off the screen. This is a motion picture for the whole family to enjoy.
