At-a-glance

You see them everywhere, in the lobby of the main building, the lunchroom, the library, many of the book rooms, and the peer tutoring room. But what is the one place identification scanners are missing? In the annex lobby.
For a student whose first class is in the annex, getting to class on time may seem like an unachievable task.
After waiting for members of the school staff to open the lobby doors, students have to push past each other if they want to get to class on time.
Imagine the difficulty a student who has to get to the third floor of the annex goes through everyday to get to class on time. The easiest way for the student to get to class on time is by utilizing Staircase A. However, since last year, Stairway A has been deemed a down staircase only. Now, the student has to use an alternative stairway to attempt to get to class on time.
“If I was late to class I lost time for my test because there wasn’t a shortcut to get class,” said Zuleimy Muniz ’13.
It was difficult to get to my first class in the annex on time said Nepthalie Delcy ’13.
If the whole point of the Identification Scanners is to track students’ attendance, why make that student late to their class?
The easiest option would be for the school to implement Identification Scanners in the annex lobby. However, that may not be the best idea.
“Every student and members of the staff must go through the main building,” said Mr.Franzese Assistant Principal of Security. “There is only one point of entry into this school because if there are multiple entries then students can sneak out and intruders can sneak in.”
Since the Identification Scanners made their first appearance in the school in the late 1990s, the intent of it being here has changed.
“The original intent was for students to not have to go to homeroom,” said Mr. Franzese. “Not only do the identification scanners make the attendance process faster, but it also helps with security.”
“If you don’t have your license with you at all times when you’re eighteen or older you may get a $150 fine,” said Mr. Franzese. “That is why having your Midwood I.D with you at all times is good practice.”
Whether your first class is in the annex or not, you should make an effort to come to school earlier not only to ensure that you’re on time but because it’s always a beautiful day to be a Hornet.
