Mr. Arthur LaGreca’s new position as athletic director is just one of the many faculty changes made at the beginning of the fall semester.
A former girls varsity basketball coach, Mr. LaGreca has been promoted to athletics director. Ms. Mary Anne Elder has split the responsibility in two but remains assistant principal of the physical education department and has taken on a coaching the girls bowling team. Mr. Michael Moore, former girls bowling team coach, has taken up the open position as girls’ varsity basketball coach. All these changes bring new faces to the season.
“I’ve been waiting for this opportunity and I’m looking forward to take full advantage and work with the girls to set them to where they need to go,” said Moore.
Mr. LaGreca has been appointed Athletic director this year after a year of being assistant Athletic director. Although it’s a job with many responsibilities, his priorities are with the athletes and their well-being. He regards Ms. Elder as a mentor and is working hard to maintain the level of achievement she has reached.
Maintaining the reputation of the school is something important to Mr. LaGreca. He seems enthusiastic about undertaking this challenge.
Dealing with 38 teams, maintaining PSAL relations, doing paper work, teaching, and keeping everything within the system is the big picture Mr. LaGreca’s job paints.
“Over all I am enjoying it. It’s fun but a work in progress,” LaGreca said.
The girls’ varsity basketball team will miss LaGreca’s guidance but are looking forward in working with Mr. Moore. “It’s going to be a win-win situation both for the team and Mr. LaGreca,” says Ashley Desir ’12. Being on the team since freshmen year, she feels the team has adjusted well as they have received a new coach and lost teammates, but positive changes are also coming as they were promised new basketball uniforms.
As the former athletic director steps down, Ms. Elder still holds onto some of her responsibilities. She is still AP of the Physical Education department and coaching will be a new challenge. Even though Ms. Elder isn’t the athletic director, she feels that both she and Mr. LaGreca have similar ideas.
“Each person places his own stamp on a job. Hopefully Mr. LaGreca will do an excellent job. I have no doubt that he will,” stated Ms. Elder.
The question remained: what was the reason for this change? Ms. Elder answered with one word: retirement.
“It’s not a change that can happen overnight; this way it will be a smooth transition to retirement,” said Ms. Elder.
