Monday, Sept. 26 marked the first attempt to spike out cancer with Volleyfest. It was held at 7 p.m. in the Sailor Center.

What is Volleyfest? It’s a fun way for groups of students to play volleyball while also raising charity for the research for a cure for breast cancer.

Students signed up in teams with each person paying $3.

Once entered, the teams played in a tournament-like fashion until a winning team was determined. The winning team consisted of Allie Napierala, Collin Rabach, Logan Smith, Hannah Smith, and Erika Vanderlaan, and they then got to play against Shores varsity girls' volleyball team.

More importantly, the two-hour event raised $140.

When the night began, the gym was hot and packed with excitement. The teams waiting to play were fired up.

“I don’t want to lose to anybody here,” senior Joe Cox said. “There’s a lot of pride on the line. I don’t want to wake up a loser the next day.”

Unfortunately, Cox's team did not make it to battle the varsity team.

Along with the awaiting teams residing in the bleachers, there were also a few fan groups.

“It’s fun to watch because one of my best friends is out there, and it’s fun to see her play,” sophomore Emma Conley said.

Friends, teachers, coaches, and parents were gathered around, anticipating the final scores. However, some were also there for their own reasons.

“It’s awesome because it’s fun to see kids that suck play volleyball,” said freshman Ryan Wasilewski, who originally planned on participating in Volleyfest. “My team got cancelled because we didn’t have enough people and too many people quit.”
