Once the winter brings snow and people start heading toward the mountains, there is always one question everyone asks, "Do prefer skiing or snowboarding?"

Although skiing is more than 200 years old, the first modern snowboard was created in 1979 (according to smithsonian.com), and since then, skiers and snowboarders haven’t gotten along.

When snowboards were first invented, they weren’t allowed on any resorts, but now 97 percent of resorts worldwide accept and encourage snowboarding, according to snowboarding.about.com.

The same web stie stated that only a few resorts still do not allow snowboarding; the most popular of those is Alta Resorts in Salt Lake City, Utah.

It is predicted by abc-of-snowboarding.com that the number of snowboarders will overtake the number of skiers by 2015.

So why don’t skiers and snowboarders get along? Some people say it’s because skiers and snowboarders have different personalities. Some people say that it’s because skiers and snowboarders have different styles of riding.

Sophomore Danielle Hilleary, who has been snowboarding for a few years, said skiers are the ones who are causing the fight.

"The reason why skiers and snowboarders don’t get along is because skiers don’t like how snowboarders are taking over, and they are scared of change," Hilleary said.

Sophomore Kenny Olsen, who has been skiing for 12 years, said snowboarders have different personalities, which makes it difficult to get along with them.

"Snowboarders are just cocky and try to act all cool and tough, when really they’re just jealous they can’t shred like skiers can," Olsen said.

Olsen, who has tried snowboarding, said skiing is better.

"I used to snowboard, but I don’t like it as much as skiing," Olsen said. "Skiing has more variety with tricks, and you can do sick mute grabs on skis but not on snowboards."

Junior Christopher Grace has also been skiing and snowboarding, but he prefers snowboarding.

"I used to ski when I was really little, but then I tried snowboarding and thought it was a lot more fun and haven’t skied since," Grace said.

Grace also said the reason skiers and snowboarders can’t get along is because of unfair stereotypes about skiers and snowboarders.

"A lot of snowboarders think that skiers are all just rich snobs, but a lot of skiers think that snowboarders are just dumb hippies or something like that," Grace said.

Sophomore Riley Williamson, who has been snowboarding for four years, said there really isn’t a reason snowboarders and skiers can’t get along.

"I don’t really get why snowboarders don’t get along," Williamson said. "Sure, every once and awhile, I’ll make fun of a skier just for fun, but other than that, I don’t really mind skiers as long as they’re nice. I’ll be nice back."
