What did you do to ring in the New Year? Did you do something exciting or something traditional?

Senior Sarah Husted says her tradition is "to hang out with neighbors and play games or watch TV and wait for the ball to drop."

Or maybe you did a new tradition like freshman Megan Hertel.

Hertel said she blows kisses; however, she refuses to actually kiss anyone because then they’ll have eternally been her real first kiss of the year.

You could have done something foreign like French teacher Judy Blackledge.

She said, "At midnight, we would go around the house with brooms; it was a clean sweep for the New Year."

This Italian tradition for Ms. Blackledge is an interesting way to spend a holiday.

"The entire family would get together, and we would cheer my dad on to sweep the house out," she said.

Husted said these traditions are "just a great way to spend time with friends."

Unlike Hertel’s tradition, Husted’s tradition was not something she came up with.

"My mom and my neighbor’s mom are good friends, so I guess they decided that we would hang out on New Year’s, she said," Husted said.

Sophomore Kim Al-Shatel also spends the holiday with her family.

"Usually, we just stay at my house with my family, and we shoot off some fireworks and watch the ball drop together; it’s kinda lame, but I love it," she said.

Most said they will continue to to honor these traditions.

Hertel said she does this because she’s afraid she’ll jinx her love life if she actually kisses someone.

Junior Tory Russell says these traditions "are a fun way to celebrate the New Year."

"I love my family’s tradition; we go to a party at our good friend’s house every year," she said.
