As you know, Presidential election campaigns have been going
on throughout the course of this year. Recently Newt Gingrich dropped out of
the elections, and left Mitt Romney and Ron Paul up for the Republican
candidates. Since Romney is well into the 900’s for the number of delegates he
has, and Paul is at 104, it is likely that Romney will be the Republican
candidate, with Obama being the Democratic candidate.
Recently
there has been discussion about Obama’s views on same sex marriage. Last week,
President Barack Obama said that he believes same sex couples should have the
right to marry.
Since
the elections are in the process, some are saying it was a risky move for him
to admit this right now, when he did. The Pew Research Center did a survey, and
about 50% of the country said that Obama’s opinion on gay marriage doesn’t
affect their opinion of him, ¼ saying that they feel less favorable of him, and
19% feeling more favorably. The country is just about split when it comes to
the support or rejection of gay marriage, so it’s tough to say that Obama’s
statement will prove to benefit him.
There
was a more intense negative reaction to Obama’s statements from the older
generation of Americans, with 42% of people over 65 years old saying they
thought less of Obama because of his decision. While 62% of people between the
ages of 18 and 29 said they didn’t care.
So, I
guess it’s tough to say if this will help or hurt Obama’s campaign, but
everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so I don’t know why people are
making such a big deal out of this.
