Starkville High School’s Model Security Council has
always enjoyed a comfortable turnout in terms of members, but after Clubs Day,
the interest shot through the roof.
“It looks like a ton of great students that are willing to work and represent
SHS in world debates,” sophomore Emily Turner said. “Hopefully, this year we
can represent all of the 15 countries instead of just a couple.”
Students in the MMSC take on the role of one of the 15 United Nations Security
Council’s countries.
“The Security Council allows students to sit down and debate about real world
issues and gives the students a chance to show how they would solve real world
issues,” SHS Model Security Council sponsor Caroline Goodman said. “It’s a great opportunity for children
to express their ideas and have their ideas broadcasted to the world.”
The Council begins meeting in October to prepare for the February MMSC
conference. Students write
resolutions to real world issues and read them to the council members.
Depending on how well resolutions are written and defended, students can win
awards that will earn points in the National Forensics League.
Juniors Colin Damms and Ethan Cartwright represented Turkey their freshman
year, writing their resolution on annexing the island of Cyprus.
“My partner and I won an award with our resolution last year,” Damms said. “It was such a fun three days of
debating, and then winning that award made it that much better. Hopefully we can do just as well this
year.”
