Reading like PE, keeps the most important muscle in the brain active during the time when the rest of the muscles are getting a two month break. While most would claim that reading is too much work and that summer is for sleeping not reading there are a lot of opportunities to read on break. One reason is it keeps your mind in shape,for next school year so the first day is not such a drag. Even an action, fantasy or romance novel will do it does not even need to be one of those 600 page novels that are assigned in class. “I get bored at home and so why not read.” freshmen Maria Cruz said. For those people who like to get ahead over summer ask an english teacher what will be assigned reading next year and get it done early. That’s good when sports and clubs are going to going on and one needs to focus. When having difficulties finding a good book, ask someone who in the past has had a similar taste or go to the library and ask someone there. Also if those who have heard about the coveted “Hunger Games” books are great reads during summer, or a good time to catch up on the series and be in the loop by the time the next movie is released in 2013. “I love reading I read a few books every summer. it keep s my mind ready for school next year.” freshmen Mariah Cid said. Another good reason to read over summer is there are places hold reading contest to see who can read the most in one summer and win prizes like scholarships. Barnes & Nobel is offering a free book to anyone who reads eight books. “Vocabulary development, critical thinking, and cultural awareness are all skills that are needed to get a job with or without a college degree. Reading helps develop all those things.” english teacher Lance Keller said.
