Students often hear the saying, “There’s no such thing as a stupid question. The only stupid question is the one not being asked.”
Unfortunately, many don’t realize how true it is and still feel uneasy about asking for help.
“Nobody should ever feel embarrassed to have something clarified that they’re unsure about,” English teacher Maureen Smith said.
The fear of embarrassment in front of peers may cause students to withhold their questions. This fear must be overcome, as high school friends are ephemeral. Knowledge is forever.
“I’m disappointed [when students don’t ask for help] because I want to make sure my students are clear on what they’re supposed to do,” Smith said.
Teachers are always willing to explain any misunderstandings and are available after class to make sure you completely understand the lesson.
If you feel uncomfortable about asking for help in front of everyone, staying after class to ask the teacher for further assistance may be less embarrassing.
A teacher’s job is to teach, and if you aren’t learning, that’s a problem for both of you. As a result, a teacher will never hesitate to help a student.
Asking questions is absolutely essential to learning. Without questions, there are no answers, and without answers, there is no learning.
Students need to take the imitative to ask questions when they need more information.
