Between schools: everything should be equal, within sports, academic privileges and administration. Orange Glen, unfortunately, does not have the same privileges as others. OGHS glorifies many sports, including  football and soccer. But they fail to recognize others like lacrosse, diving, fencing, gymnastics and rugby. Many students would be thrilled to participate in these sports.

Football is a high school tradition and has been for years. But around San Diego County, schools have chosen to accept other sports into the mix. Some schools such as Poway and Mira Mesa both have Lacrosse, one reason why OGHS junior Eugenia Madrigal was planning on transferring to Mira Mesa.

“It’s a different version of field hockey, more aggressive. It’s expensive to do recreational, which is why kids do school sports,“ said Madrigal.

Getting a new sport active at a high school level is very tricky. There needs to be enough team members, coaches, and funding to make it run. There is also the process of deciding what season it falls under and what schools would participate, because not many other cities have said sports.

Athletic Director Jason Patterson said, “A lot of schools don’t have them. [OGHS students] would need the support, they would have to bring the idea to the principal, he would bring it to the school board and they would present it. It’s not personal, it’s a process.”

Escondido high school has two very unique year-round sports: ultimate frisbee and roller hockey. San Pasqual high school has diving as a sport that many of their students participate in. Mission Hills and Del Norte add to list of San Diego schools that have lacrosse available to play. For students that are interested in gymnastics, Mt. Carmel includes the sport in their athletics.

“I love the sports they already have. It would be awesome to have some new ones, though. Volleyball is my favorite and I want to play for the next three years,” said freshman Julia Blackburn. There is always talk about wanting new sports at Orange Glen. With determination, any devoted group of students can succeed in finally getting the sport they want. Just like getting a new club or a new rule in the handbook, it’s a step-by-step system that takes time.
