Under Great White Northern Lights, the White Stripes’ first-ever live album, was released March 16, 2010 to the ever expectant and extremely hopeful public.
The White Stripes haven’t been heard from in almost three years, but to the delight of their fans, the well known band has come out with a new CD and also a DVD called Under Great White Northern Lights. It is a live documentation of the band’s 2007 summer tour in Canada. Although the band had cancelled their U.S. tour that was supposed to take place later in 2007, this is a way to participate in the live experience. This album demonstrates Meg and Jack White’s outstanding performance out of the normal studio recordings. Under Great White Northern Lights touches on some of the band’s best known songs and also combined with some covers. The documentary shows the colorful detail of the White Stripes’ travels. With Jack White’s witty scheme of playing secret shows all across every territory in Canada, such as in bowling alleys, buses and any other spontaneous locations they could find, one will surely be entertained.
Even for die-hard fans Under Great White Northern Lights has a great twist on old favorites. Jack enjoys recreating some of their hits making songs unrecognizable, such as “Fell in Love With a Girl.” Another perk of this record is the heavy audience participation is present allowing listeners to jump right in with them. These changes bring new life to the tracks and never stood out to before. This disc is more appropriate for patrons whom are willing to tag along with Jack’s daring reinterpretations. They aren’t perfect reproductions of favorite White Stripes tunes, but the outcome is pretty impressive. After hearing this CD fans will be sure to want to catch them in concert as soon as possible.
