Outdoor Track, the sport with the most participants, has different events but the sprinters are one of the most recognized groups.

The sprinting events are the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter races. The "boot camp"-like conditions Coach Fenn and Coach Griff train their sprinters with has strengthened the team and their skills.

“They work incredibly hard,” said sophomore pole-vaulter Matthew Fadus. “There are times in speed workouts when you see the sprinters throwing-up on the side."

One student who has persevered through it all successfully is senior Stephen Headley. He has a reputation throughout New England for being fast.

Headley's status among track stars is not without merit. This past winter he placed seventeenth in the country in indoor track for the 50-yard dash.

“It feels good,” said Headley, “but it still means that there are 16 people faster than me. I still have much to approve on.”

Sprinting seems like it may be easy but according to Headley there is much more than running. “The most important thing is form,” said Headley, “form and repetition is key.”

The stories of speed workouts that fill the halls once a week are “not as bad as you think,” said Headley. “Coach Fenn and Coach Griff are funny in the no-nonsense kind of way."

That no-nonsense coaching has led the Boys’ Track team to three consecutive Western Mass. titles. The sprinters are going to be well prepared to compete in this year’s Western Mass. Championship meet.

With an all-star team of Headley, juniors Zack Karouma, Matt Hellinger, and Mike and Dave Joliceur, and senior Sam Boyd, the sprinters, along with the rest of the Boys Track team, should take home another title to add to the list.

The hard work that all of the track athletes put in at every practice makes them worthy of the four-peat. To those interested in track, Headley said, “Just do it. I didn't want to at first, but with the help of my parents and friends pushing me to, I've been able to accomplish what I have.”
