Peter Pan

In a world that is full of rules of grown ups, Wendy does not want to grow up and stop having the fun children have. One night while she is sleeping, Peter Pan visits her and her two brothers in London. He tells them of a magical place without rules and parents, where they can be young forever. He whisks them away to Never-Never Land where they encounter Captain Hook, Tinkerbell, and many other great adventures.

This classic tale was interpreted with an artistic and creative style making Peter Pan a new age classic. Many surrealistic and magical aspects successfully captured the magical childhood tale. Used with actors and not cartoons, this re-make of the much-loved literary and film classic still matches the magical feeling of the original. Director P.J. Hogan (Muriel's Wedding, My Best Friend's Wedding) also puts a darker twist on the original animated version, making it a scarier film for young children. The Peter Pan re-make was a very successful one that will go down as a new favorite for kids and adults alike.

I give this movie 3 stars.

Something’s Gotta Give

The romantic comedy Something’s Gotta Give is a coming of age film that captures the essence of life. Harry Langer (Jack Nicholson) is a swinging fifty year old entertainment executive, who surrounds himself with many young girlfriends. During one of his romantic flings with Marin (Amanda Peet), he suffers a heart attack. When the attack takes place, Marin and Harry are staying at the home of Marin's mother, Erica (Diane Keaton) in the Hamptons. Erica, a successful playwright with no love life decides to stay with Harry while he recovers at her home. As Harry recovers, he's surprised to find himself growing fond of a woman his own age. When his thirty something doctor Julian (Keanu Reeves) also becomes attracted to Erica, Harry finds out how much she really means to him.

A well-crafted story that captures Diane Keeton and Jack Nicholson’s onscreen chemistry, Something’s Gotta Give is a wonderful movie for everyone. What comes across as a movie made for middle age couples, this movie caters to people of all ages. Its sincerity and humor makes it a box office hit and another successful movie both Keeton and Nicholson have partaken in.

I give this movie 3 stars.

Swimming Pool

Famous British novelist Sarah Morton is well known for her mystery novels full of sex, violence, and murder. When she is ready to write her new book, she retreats to her publisher’s French country home for new inspiration. While there she finds the peace and quiet of the isolated villa until one night the serenity is disrupted. Her publisher’s teenage daughter Julie has decided to retreat to the house as well. Personalities and lifestyles of the two intensely different females clash disturbing Sarah’s focus. The author soon becomes intrigued by the overly sexual and carefree attitude of Julie. Sarah’s obsession with the girl becomes so great that she writes her novel on the summer they spend together at the house and the impact Julie makes on her life.

Filmed with sensitivity and passion Swimming Pool is a great success. Released in the summer of 2003 in many small theaters, Swimming Pool was a steamy hit. Director François Ozon did a fantastic job telling this passionate story through the use of two main symbols. The summer in this film symbolizes youth and passion that is persistent throughout the whole storyline. The pool is also a very significant symbol, representing freedom and purity. In the beginning of the movie the pool is closed and dirty. Once Julie arrives she opens the pool and brings passion and life to the whole atmosphere. Julie represents all teenagers and their passion while Sarah represents adults with their stubborn ideas and ways of living. Not only is this movie a wonderful mystery, it also shows the way we live at different ages. Swimming Pool brings a sense of pleasure that many people have inside but lack to show.

I give this movie 4 stars.
