On October 27, D.U.C.K.S. members made their way to the Highland Senior Center clad in Halloween costumes for a day of fun, food, and dancing.
Before they left, senior D.U.C.K.S. member Sarah Heaps said, “This is my fourth year going. I am really looking forward to line dancing, polka music, and candy.”
Once they arrived, they were greeted with warm smiles by seniors also dressed in Halloween attire. The event included dances that the seniors were familiar with, such as the freeze dance and chicken dance. Other fun activities included the “broom dance,” in which the lone person without a partner was left to dance with a broom.
After dancing and eating, D.U.C.K.S. presidents Laurel Jones and Blain Anderson stood and presented a check for $200 to the Senior Center. This money came from the pendants sold during homecoming.
“I think it’s great to see our money that we worked hard to earn go to the community. It is a wonderful feeling,” Jones said.
Line dance teacher at the Senior Center Bob Twardzik said, “We appreciate what D.U.C.K.S. does. We are glad that young people are still interested in giving.”
A costume contest was then held for the high school students. They were told to walk in the circle as senior center members chose winners. Junior Katy Hohenberger’s “udderly funny” cow costume won her a prize, as did senior Zach Frost’s zombie attire. Senior Alex Cox, dressed as a taco, sombrero and mustache included, won the third and final prize of the night.
The contest was then turned over to the D.U.C.K.S. presidents, Blain Anderson and Laurel Jones, who chose the winners out of the senior’s costumes. Twardzik, dressed as “Johnny Cash” with dollar bills attached to his outfit won a duo prize along with Allen Hilsmeire, former president of the senior center, dressed as “Johnny Credit” with a credit card strapped to his cowboy hat. Other winning costumes included a storm and a dead man.
Junior and first time participant, Jessi Shade, said, “I thought it was a blast. All the people here were so happy! Everyone was laughing and having a great time.”
Hilsmeire said, “The kids bring life to us. It was so fun to watch them. This is the best part of the year for us. We appreciate [D.U.C.K.S.] generosity and hope that it helps the club as well.”
Senior D.U.C.K.S. member and costume contest winner Cox, says, “We danced and partied like never before. I wish I could come back and do it some more.”
