Out of all Maryland’s high schools, Edgewood High School was one out of the 3 chosen to participate in the national broadcast of the “Let’s Move” program started by First Lady Michelle Obama. The high school was visited by the Baltimore Raven’s cheerleaders, and was put on television Tuesday morning.

The “Let’s Move” program was started by First Lady Michelle Obama, and was designed to solve the obesity epidemic in America. The program encourages kids of all ages to get up and active to lose weight and stay healthy. Obama plans to solve the obesity problem within a generation so that the next generation of children will grow up to their adulthood and be healthy. The program has taken simple steps towards providing schools with the necessary equipment for students to be more active and stay healthy.

Award winning singer and actor Beyonce Knowles has helped the program. Knowles used one of her well known songs and remixed it into a dance workout routine for children. The routine is to be performed by the schools that were picked and will be viewed by millions on national television. As the students are performing one of the schools will receive a surprise visit from Knowles.

To be picked for the participation in this event, Edgewood High School had to create a video that basically explained why they should be picked for the program. The dance teacher and journalism advisor of Edgewood High Schools said, “One of the great things about this project was creating the video entry. I simply asked the kids, ‘Why should EHS be chosen to be a part of the live broadcast?’ Hearing the students’ candid, off the cuff responses was really inspiring. We didn’t do much editing-the kids just spoke from the heart. I only had an hour to put together the video, so I couldn’t include all the responses, but some of the students said they wanted to make a positive difference in their community, they wanted to improve the reputation of Edgewood and show everyone how much they loved dance, what really good kids they are – despite what people say when they first hear…’you go to Edgewood?’ The students are so enthused!”

Edgewood High School is one of the only two schools that offer dance as an art elective. The school has performed their own flash mobs for their audience including raiding the cafeteria dressed up as zombies and performing Michael Jackson’s Thriller.
