Teachers hit the books

Finding a hard time picturing your teacher sitting at the desk instead of standing above it?

Contrary to what many students assume, when the 2 o’clock bell rings, teachers do not always head directly home.  Many teachers are instead heading from one classroom to another.

Mr. Ott is working on his second master’s degree in Administration and Supervision at the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore.   His class meets every Thursday night from 6-9PM.   “We get a lot of homework, and there are lots of reading assignments.” “But, I apply the same standards to my schoolwork that I hold to my students,” said Ott.

While still keeping up with their responsibilities as guidance counselors, both Mr. Johnstone and Ms. Renzulli are working toward their Administrative certificate. Their class meets on Tuesdays for 3 hours and also requires a heavy workload. They are both doing the 30 and beyond program which is 30 credits after their masters.

Mrs. Harward and Ms. Duncun attended an AP English workshop at Parkville High school on March 5. It was provided by the College Board and teachers were given resources to help improve their AP classes, and answer any questions they had about what students needed to know for the exam this year.

Teachers are required to get 6 credits every 5 years in order to renew their certification. Ms. Dare is taking a 3 week grad class online on classroom management from the University of Phoenix. The course with require 25-30 hours of additional work a week not including her other classroom obligations. The cost of the 3 week course is $585, but since it is a requirement to take to renew certification HCPS will reimburse a portion of it.

HCPS requires its teachers to earn continuing education credits throughout their professional career.   The school reimburses the staff a portion of the cost so long as the teacher receives a grade of C or better for completed coursework.
