“It’s the highlight of the year, not only for students but teachers look forward to it,” said Mr. Tim Dougherty who attended Peer Leadership last year and is attending again this year.
On May 6 and 7, a selected number of students will be going to Peer Leadership Weekend held at Sandy Hill Camp and Conference Center in northeast Maryland. Teachers choose students who they think would be good leaders. Leadership qualities and attributes are taught, and activities are done to teach students how to be a leader to the school. Mr. Ed Herbold has gone on the trip and said, “There is a lot of group building, trust sequences, and students climb walls and ropes. It teaches the best things for our school.”
A lot of activities are held during the weekend. Dougherty said, “There are a lot of competitions and games that require you to work together as a team, and require a lot of different skill sets. You get to learn a lot about people.”
Mrs. Jen Chandler started the program in her second year of teaching. “We saw an opportunity for students to have leadership experiences outside of school.” This is the 13 year of peer leadership.
Over the course of the weekend the students get to see about 20 teachers throughout the weekend, “which I think is incredible.”
