As Muammar Gaddafi's forces continue to try and regain major cities in Libya, rebel forces continue to try to overthrow the tyrannical government.

The 2 warring sides are currently locked in a bloody battle over the motorway that leads to Benghazi, a major rebel stronghold in the country. Gaddafi’s forces and the rebel forces have been attacking one another and taking settlements from each other since the violence erupted almost 2 weeks ago. The rebel leader has been reminding foreign reporters that there are special tactics involved in desert warfare, insisting that the revolution is not lost.

Gaddafi has the ability to wipe out the rebels with his superior firepower, including air raids and naval power. Many foreign leaders worry that Gaddafi will attempt to bomb the rebels out of major oil towns.

Late Sunday, the rebels retook a major town, Brega. Nobody knows how long they will be able to hold onto the town since the fights are typically a small amount of forces from either side fighting over large territories. “I hope that the rebels will be able to gain their independence without too much violence” commented North Harford freshman Caitlyn O’Sullivan. Unfortunately, this goal seems unrealistic as Gaddafi is facing the problem of long supply lines between towns to support his army. Rebels are expected to reach the much larger town of Ajdabiya sometime later this week. The population of Ajdabiya is estimated to be around 75,000 to 100,000.

Most, if not all, are opposed to Gaddafi’s military campaign. As recent as this Friday the UN has adopted a resolution to declare air space over Libya a no fly zone. Military leaders predict that if Gaddafi attempts a frontal assault on either city, he will leave his rear unprotected and that rebels will attempt guerilla style warfare. At this point in the civil war it is very difficult to have a decisive position on who will leave this battle alive. Gaddafi took another hit at the UN when reports that he began bombing the town of Benghazi and his military has began to arrest rebel leaders arose.
