In June, Twilight fans will be swarming stores, and of course the internet, for Stephenie Meyer’s new book, The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, which is written from the point of view of a newly turned vampire.

Meyer originally began writing this novella, which Meyer calls her own version of a short story, before the original Twilight story was even published. She first intended for this story to be part of The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide, but because of its length, it was published as a book.

On her website, www.styepheniemeyer.com, she says, “This story was something that I worked on off and on for a while, just for fun, in between the times I was writing or editing other Twilight novels. Later, when the concept for The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide came up, I thought that might be a good place for Bree. Her story is a nice complement to Eclipse; it explains a lot of the things that Bella never knew. So I dusted it off and finished it up for placement in the Guide.”

Because Meyer planned for The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner to be part of the guide, for a limited time, she is going to offer a free download of her book online. “I wanted to be able to offer it to my fans for free. You all have bought a ton of my books, and I wanted to give you this story as a gift,” says Meyers. From noon of June 7 to July 5, the download will be available at www.breetanner.com.

Meyer and her publisher still wanted to produce a physical book that could be added to fans’ sets. Also, by selling the hard copy books, Meyers plans to help out people all around the world. For each book purchased, 1 dollar will be donated to the American Red Cross. Also, when fans go to download the story online, there will be an option to make a donation to the American Red Cross. “I think that we can really help a lot of people with this,” says Meyer.
