Broken Bells: One of indie’s most successful collaborations to date

This highly anticipated collaboration between James Mercer of The Shins and Danger Mouse’s Brian Burton combines the talents of 2 largely successful indie mavericks, both of whom have the uncanny ability to make really catchy music.
The album starts off with the duo’s first single, “The High Road”, a song that combines Burton’s signature trip-hop beats with Mercer’s classic “oohs” and “ahhs,” all while weaving in haunting piano and guitar chords. For example, the punchy “Vaporize” will surely make fans of The Shins and Gorillaz alike hope that Mercer and Burton continue to play off each other’s areas of expertise.
These kooky but calculated layers of harmonies and unusual instruments are not exclusive to the first track. Full of glistening melodies, intoxicating chord progressions, and synths, this album takes listeners on a journey to depths of the universe if listened to in its entirety. In an interview on NPR’s “All Things Considered” radio show, Burton suggests that this isn’t an album to listen to on shuffle because of the unique transitions between songs.
However, the songs blend together in such a fashion that causes the listener to grow slightly bored due the lackadaisical organization of the tracks.
Their self-titled album has already charmed its way onto the charts, captivating fans of the alternative music spectrum. The duo played at SXSW on Thursday March 17, 2010 and has a few live shows lined up for Spring 2010. To hear some of their songs live, visit www.npr.org/music .
