Why I love the Olympics:

MOLLY PLOUGHMAN- Reporter

There are just some things I don’t get very excited about— our country’s affairs and sports are among the few, but when the Olympics come around, color me a foam-finger waving patriot.

As a notorious adversary of the growing importance of sporting events, I can’t help to feel shocked about my obsession with the Olympics. For a few days I was in quite a stupor- everything I knew about my relationship with my country and the sports community had changed.

As a result, I did some soul-searching to figure out why I loved this event so much. I’m quite please with the results.

Reasons why I love the Olympics (and why you should too!):

1.    For about two weeks the world stops obsessing over the lives of celebrities whose talents are mediocre at best and gives due recognition to our country’s top athletes. I recognize that there are more worthy people of this recognition, but at least it’s better than glorifying someone because of their pretty face.

2.    Now it’s my opinion that our nation doesn’t really have too much to brag about right now- our economy is in shambles, our politicians are divided, and our industries are dying, but we sure do make good athletes! The United States won a total of 37 medals- more than any other nation, topping the charts.

3.    The results of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics really teach about true American values. I think these events can be interpreted as the epitome of how hard work, dedication, talent and passion can pay off.

4.    Just like the Super Bowl, Olympic commercials are really great. However these ones appeal to healthy family values, instead of cheap entertainment and thrills. This year a big theme was “being an Olympian’s mom” and I thought that was really respectable.

5.    News broadcasts are positive for once, giving due praise to these athletes who work hard instead of focusing attention another murder or snow storm.

6.    And lastly, the Olympics bring the world together for 2 weeks of encouragement, respect and praise. For 2 weeks, we’re all diplomats. Doesn’t it feel good?
