At-a-glance

Pinterest is a new social media site for women to get obsessed with. First it was AIM, then came Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and now finally the wonderful world of pinning, Pinterest.

So what is all this crazy talk of repinning and boards? Pinterest is an online, virtual pinboard created in 2009, that also has a website and an app for the iPhone.  A pin is an image added to pinterest. You can “pin” photos and videos with captions that go on your account. All this goes on a board, or boards, which are categorized into certain topics. Also you may search Pinterest and “repin” from other boards borrowing ideas and sharing your interests. These “repins” will link to your account and you can put them on your boards.

Pinterest also allows you to follow your friends and their boards or just random boards themselves. Many ideas come from visiting boards with weddings, recipes and even home interior. Some main topics on the site to search are Art, Design, Education, Fitness, Hair & Beauty, Home Décor, Humor, Pets, Photography, and Wedding & Events.

“It’s more mature than all the other networking sites and it’s most appropriate for girls our age. It inspires you to make little crafts,” sophomore, Malea Arvin, said.

Some of the pins on Pinterest are considered to be a little more on the feminine side than others. Pinterest’s Facebook fans are 97% women, AppData shows. But don’t get the wrong idea guys; there are many interesting pins for you too, like Architecture, Cars & Motorcycles, Food & Drink, Men’s Apparel, Outdoors, and Sports.

“It (Pinterest) is really addicting and cool. My mom has one,” junior, Heath Coppenger said.

A downfall to Pinterest is the process of getting an account. Unlike Facebook and Twitter you cannot sign up automatically on pinterest.com. You may request an invite though, where you give your email address and get sent to the waiting list, where an email will later come welcoming you to make an account. Another option is finding someone with an account and have them send invites to friends, family, and whomever. Once your email has come you have to sign up through Facebook or Twitter. But wait that’s not all, if you choose Facebook, which more people seem to have, you have to have or install the timeline app. Though it may be a confusing process, many people say it is well worth it and better than other sites.

“It’s very fun, it distracts me from Facebook,” sophomore, Jessica Huentelman, said.

Pinterest has had some rapid growth since December of 2011. According to comScore there are 11.7 million U.S. visitors to Pinterest each month. Pinterest is, indeed, the new, popular social networking site so be sure to check it out.
