Whenever the weather forecast calls for snow, or even just snow flurries, the first thing that enter the minds of us Ross High School students, maybe even the staff's as well, is: snow day. When students wake up in the morning after a snowfall the previous night, they get out from under the warm covers to go check the T.V. for school closings.  They wait and wait until it gets to the letter R, praying it will say "closed."  When it skips past Ross, they sigh, and hope there's still enough time for a closure or delay.  But when they do read the word "closed" they are immediately relieved that they get to spend the day at home relaxing.  We all love snow days, but there is one downside to them: making up the extra days in the summer.

Last year and previous years, all schools were allowed five calamity days, days given for extenuating circumstances, such as snow storms, power outages, etc.  Now, this year, school districts are only allowed three calamity days. If more than three days are used, students must make the days up.  According to the Ohio Department of Education website, state lawmakers changed the number of calamity days to increase the number of days students are in school without having to pay teachers extra money.

RHS now has zero calamity days left.  If there are any more snow days, students will have to make the days up at the end of the year.  A lot of students don't agree with the change of calamity days because they think it's not enough. Sophomore Jenny Shelton said, "I feel like that's not enough days because we've already used all of our snow days and winter has barely even started. I don't want school to be pushed all the way back into July."

Although it's a bummer that if Ross get any more snow days we'll have to make those missed days up, it's still like an unexpected gift of fun. Almost everybody loves to have a day off to spend at home.  But let's say you do happen to get a snow day and you can't think of a good way to spend your day.  Don't just sit there and waste it; here are some things you can do to have some snow day fun:

Indoor:
  • Make snow "ice cream"
  • Play video or computer games
  • Bake cookies
  • Make hot chocolate and watch one of your favorite movies
  • Scrapbook all of those pictures that have just been lying around
  • Give your pets some attention
  • Read one of those books that you've been meaning to get to
  • Catch up on some sleep

Outdoor:
  • Build a snowman
  • Go sledding
  • Build a snow fort
  • Have a snowball fight!
  • Make snow angels

That's only half of the stuff you can do to make your snow day more fun. Here are ways in which RHS students have fun on their day with no school:

"I sleep in and enjoy my time off school." –Sophomore, Zach Schwab

"I sit at home and chill on the computer or watch movies." –Sophomore, Shannon Bernardi

"Hang out with my friends." –Sophomore, Anna Fry

"I read." –Freshman, Hannah Smith

"Hang out with my siblings." –Freshman, Katlyn Garrow

"I relax and read." –Freshman, Katie Steelman

"I sleep in and relax." –Freshman, Maddy Reed

“I stay at home and relax.” –Senior, Brian Huber

“I sleep in and then once I wake up, I ride four wheelers in the snow.” –Senior, Logan Hannon

“I play in the snow, obviously.” –Junior, Courtney Bacher

As you can see, there's plenty of things you can do when you are stuck at home on a snow day.  Next time you're stuck in this situation, try doing one of these things on the list.
