Stunning, heart-pounding, and gripping are only a few of the words that describe Martin Scorsese’s new thriller, “Shutter Island”, based on the book by Dennis Lehane.

“Shutter Island” was great. It kept me thinking through the whole movie and even after it was over,” said junior Taylor Spencer.

“Shutter Island” is about a federal marshal, Teddy Daniels, played by Leonardo DiCaprio. He goes to Shutter Island with his partner, Chuck Aule, played by Mark Ruffalo, to find a missing murderess at the Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane.

As Teddy and Chuck begin to ask questions about Rachel, they notice that some of the patients and staff are on edge and seem as if they are hiding something. The progression of the movie makes Teddy’s character seem curious, raising questions such as: Why is he there? Is he there to find the missing patient? Is he there to seek revenge on someone in his past? Is he there to expose the rumored drug and surgical experimentation? But as he begins to seek answers to these questions, he starts to realize that he might never be able to get off the island.

People who have read the book should be pleased with the way Martin Scorsese has adapted the story to become a motion picture. Scorsese did not change much, but did alter the code the missing patient left behind. Instead of it being as long as it was in the book, he shortened it to two lines. I think that if Scorsese would have included the rest of the quote, the ending would be a lot easier to understand.

“I thought Shutter Island was a very good movie, but if I had not read the book, I do not think that I would have been able to understand the ending as well as I did,” said junior Taylor Spencer.

Other than Scorsese leaving out most of the code, the  movie is a great success. Scorsese will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the whole movie. For all you movie goers, this is one you will not want to miss.
