Closed Stations Cause Commuting Delays

Junior Jaerim Lee said ever since the Coney Island bound Q train on the Avenue U and Neck Road stations were closed, he said it has added a minimum of 20 minutes to his commute going home each day.

“It is annoying and bad,” said Lee. “It takes more time to get home from school and time is precious.”

Since last December, Murrow students can no longer take the Coney Island bound Q train to the Avenue U or Neck Road stations because of ongoing construction.

Instead students must take the Coney Island bound Q train to the Sheepshead Bay station and transfer to the Manhattan bound Q train, or use the special B3K bus from Kings Highway for service to Avenue U on weekdays, between Ocean Avenue and Gerritsen Avenue.

“It’s time consuming,” said Danny Ng, senior. “I’d rather the train not be fixed because this construction takes about a year or so.”

The project, which costs the MTA $28.9 million, is expected to continue until January 2010.

“It takes too much time to get around even when I’m not traveling to school,” said Kelly Song, senior.

The trains going to Coney Island have been moved to the Express tracks south of Kings Highway. For many Murrow students’, commuting is usually about 10 minutes long but it adds an additional 20 to 25 minutes to the ride on the way home.

“This project affects too many people that live around Neck Road and Avenue U,” said Lee. “I want to send a complaint to the MTA for the many people that have the same problem, because they relate to my problem.”
