Graduating from a coed middle school, you would think your next step would be to go to a coed high school… but your parents decided it would be best to send you to a same-sex high school. Now, I know you’re probably thinking your life is going to end because you’ll be surrounded by the same sex. A coed school versus a same-sex school has been a subject a lot people have different views and opinions about. School is still school at the end of the day, but determining what kind of school is best for your child also plays a part.
There are benefits to going to a same-sex school. You as a student will be less distracted by the opposite sex and will focus more in school. Since you won’t be surrounded by the opposite sex most of the day, you’ll be more attentive to your teachers and school work. That leads to less drama between boy-girl altercations. The reason for coming to a same-sex school will be to learn and concentrate rather than looking to catch the opposite gender’s attention. You may feel segregated from the opposite sex, but when they aren’t around you’ll feel less stressed and more attentive. You don’t have to think about your appearance as much. You feel more independent and confident in the same-sex school; you feel as if you don’t need the opposite sex to help you succeed in situations. You have yourself and that makes you more determined to get through in the “real world” when you graduate from high school.
Usually for same-sex schools, there are Catholic and private, which require tuition and uniforms. Wearing a uniform is a positive thing because it allows you as a student to focus more in school than thinking about the latest style and what to wear in the morning.
You learn the same thing from a coed and a same-sex school but focusing is a key element in school. Statistics from Debatepedia.com show that students do perform better in a same-sex school on exams and state tests due to being more attentive in class and to your schoolwork.
When it comes to sex education, this is often a complicated subject to be taught in Catholic same-sex schools due to their religious principles they have at the school. However, sex education can still be taught in same-sex schools making them no different from public coed schools.
You are probably still thinking that same-sex schools aren’t your first idea and you would never walk in there in your life. Usually, pre-teens and teens try to impress the opposite sex due to hormones. That’s a major distraction from their schoolwork because both genders are getting older and might want to experiment with their sexuality.
Same sex schools prevent that somewhat. They take away the need to impress someone and the idea of exploring your sexuality.
School is mainly for your education – not for your sexuality. Going to a same-sex school helps you focus more on your future and helps the teachers teach what they need to teach you without worrying that you’re not learning the information taught due to the opposite sex.
