The holidays are near and everyone has been busy trying to get their Christmas shopping lists done. But with this declining economy, will people be able to get everything on their wish lists? Or, will they have to cut back on some things in order to be able to ring in the New Year with at least some change in their pockets?

It’s no secret that getting the essentials has become increasingly difficult with today’s economy. Prices have been rising and wages have been dropping. Unfortunately, this means sacrificing some things off our wish list or compromising with our loved ones on what to get for them.
Senior Jenny Balaguer says that she is not buying as many presents this year and that her family is doing a Kris Kringle in which one family member buys for one other member in order to save money. “As long as I’m with my family and I’m having fun, it’s all that matters,” says Jenny.

For those who have more people to buy presents for, things will surely be different this year. Global Studies teacher Mrs. Di Gangi stated that she wouldn’t be buying as many big presents as she used to since she doesn’t have as much to spend.

Mrs. Barron, freshman Living Environment teacher and senior Psychology teacher, has two daughters and plans to give each only one big present.

She says, “They get presents from other family members so there’s no need to go overboard.” Mrs. Barron feels that her kids will appreciate one thing that they really want as opposed to being thrown random gifts.

This economy has found ways to hinder many families from getting things they want. Fortunately, there are still many ways to get what you want this holiday season without spending too much money.

Even so, the love and company of family and friends and celebrating Christ’s birth is what this holiday is all about!
