The City Explorers Club journeyed from St. Joseph High School to Corridor Art Gallery in Brooklyn. Upon arriving there, students were greeted by Meredith and David, and walls full of beautiful pieces of art. Some were created recently, while others were created years ago.
The theme that unites such captivating pieces together was motion. Each sculpture or painting had to do with motion, whether it was the creation that moves, the meaning of the painting that deals with movement, or the painting showing movement.
The first painting was made by Yuri Marder. His paintings had people sitting and posing, with different backgrounds from different places. On the sides of the paintings were writings from artists.
The next part of the exhibit were of the work of Alexandra Limpert. She made two motorized sculptures: “I” and “Guardian”. She also created two human powered sculptures called “Butterfly” and “Bird”.
The next painting was by Giuseppe De Lelio. He painted movement from the sea and the seashore.
Terry Rosenberg’s pieces were of the glares people make when they move. His two subjects were a dancer and an actor.
Claudia Alvarez made two paintings dealing with children moving. She uses her face to represent “the child within”.
Lynne Yamamoto had paintings dealing with her culture, which is half Hawaiian and half Japanese. She also made a piece with flowers which has the face of fallen Japanese soldiers in the middle.
Marina Zurkow was the next artist in the exhibit. She created an animated motion picture of elephants swimming as well as planes sinking. She also made a stop motion sculpture of a plane made entirely out of cardboard.
Danny Simmons made a painting full of swirls which represented how his emotions move him.
Ed Rath made a painting with a tree floating on a raft approaching a waterfall. It represents taking what life gives you with ease.
Last but definitely not least, the workings of our very own Ms. Candy were presented. Her pieces were of dancers, made entirely out of cut papers that were performing traditional African dances. Ms. Candy explains to us that dancing was a way of learning more about her culture.
Whether the artist is using a paintbrush or clay, art is the same thing. It is a creative form of expression and emotion.
