This year ten seniors were chosen to become Higher Horizon Interns, where they will able to gain work experience before they graduate. This year the interns include: Maria Flores, Leah Hampton, Marlene Hernandez, Michelle Leon, Angel Mak, Victoria Myrthil, Yolgie Pierre, Ana Rodriguez, Simone Thomas, and Jenna Vernon.
These seniors are given the opportunity to intern in big companies such as Estee Lauder, Simpson Thacher and Bartlett Law Firm and Fine Arts Imaging.
Every year Sister Clare Cecilia sends out letters to eligible seniors informing them about their chance to become a Higher Horizons Intern. In the letter, they receive information on the application that they would have to fill out and the requirements that have to be met once they are in the program. Higher Horizons contributes to many school events throughout the year; from presentations on career planning to talks on the AIDs epidemic.
These internships provide young women with opportunities to work as interns in big companies or small private offices where they can make connections and speak to professionals and discover what kind of career paths they would like to pursue.
Apart from attending worksites on eight Fridays for three months they must also attend workshops on a few Saturdays throughout the year. At the workshops they are taught how to write resumes and about the proper attire for the professional business world. They are lectured by many successful women who are in the business world who give them advice on college interviews and money management.
Many of the interns find these workshops to be useful such as Michelle Leon who says “They are useful because they help me manage my money properly.”
The internships provided by Higher Horizons are a great opportunity for many students to speak to professionals who work in career paths in which they are interested. When asked what the best part of her internship experience was, senior Simone Thomas said “ Hearing about the mentors’ experiences and what they had to do to get to where they are which inspires me to aim for whatever my goals are and not shy away and to do it to the best of my ability.”
Hopefully in the years to come, Higher Horizons will continue to provide SJHS seniors with internships. Just like the thankful young women from the previous years, they would be able to make connections and get a taste of what working in a corporate setting is like. Seniors also learn many important skills that will help them later on in life.
