On Wednesday, January 18th, Coxsackie-Athens High School was placed on lockdown for a time after an empty bullet shell was found in the school. No injuries or other dangers were discovered in connection with this incident.

Below is the  text sent by district superintendent Mr. Squier to all parents on January 18th, via automated phone messaging, regarding a lockdown in the  high school.

"This morning [January 18th], an empty bullet shell was found by a student in a high school classroom who then notified the school office.  The school’s lockdown procedures were activated.  The school called the Coxsackie police.  The state police were also dispatched to the school.  The state police conducted a search of the building and authorized the school to resume to its regular schedule.

"The students and staff should be commended for their cooperation during this incident.  These precautionary steps were taken to ensure the safety of all students and staff.  The school reminds all students and parents that the possession of firearms, knives and ammunition is strictly prohibited on school grounds.  "
