Men in Black 3 successfully updates an old franchise
Advertising

(June 5, 2012) --  It’s safe to say that Men in Black 3 covers up the mess that the second installment of the franchise made. The third film should rekindle the passion that any Men in Black fan had for the first movie.

Men In Black 3 has a very similar plot to that of any other Men in Black movie. Aliens come to Earth and it’s the job of the secret organization that wears black suits and black shades to save. Each movie has its own little twist on the same concept, and it just happens to be time travel for Men in Black 3

The story begins with high security convict Boris the Animal (Jemaine Clement) escaping from an alien prison located on the Moon. Boris escapes with the sole intention of going back in time to 1969 and killing Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones), the man who sent him to alien jail. It’s then up to Agent K’s partner Agent J (Will Smith) to also experience the wonder of time travel as he goes back a day before Boris and works with Agent K’s younger self (Josh Brolin) to kill both future and past Boris.

While it seems like the dimension of time travel adds an unnecessary amount of confusion to a movie that’s supposed to be simple and fun, it’s done in a way that is easy to follow and actually adds positively to the film. While already a humorous movie, time travel enables the writers to include more subtle jokes that fans enjoy and poke fun at the older generation.

Ten years after the second movie and 15 years after the first, Men in Black 3 definitely uses the advancements in special effects to its advantage. The series is iconic for the unique traits of different alien species and the wacky disguises that aliens make to assimilate themselves with the human population, and the development in CGI technology is apparent.

While the CGI is good, the most satisfying aspect of the film is acting. Although Smith’s acting seemed to feel less Fresh Prince of Bel Air and more Independence Day, Brolin’s portrayal of a young Agent K was spot on. He seems to have all of Jones’ unique mannerisms and really steal the show.

If you enjoyed the simple stories and sometimes sophomoric humor from the previous Men in Black, you’ll enjoy the third rendition of the series. If you thought the previous Men in Black movies were stupid, you should still give Men in Black 3 a chance.
