(February 10, 2000) -- Last week, Rick DeBurgh, director of food services for Glendale schools, discussed about the kinds of food that would be offered at the school.

According to DeBurgh, the food that will be added to Clark’s menu are fresh fruit, fresh salad with cherry tomatoes, baby carrots, cucumbers along with different salad dressings and cooked vegetables such as broccoli, carrots and green peas.

“We need better food because we are in a better school,” complained sophomore Araz Barsegian.

The students and teachers who attended the lunch meeting conferred about changing the school’s lunch menu.  DeBurgh said Clark would see a variety of choices if students cooperate financially.  There will be no price change in the salad, but in order to have a gardenburger, there will be a charge of 70 cents.  Some at the meeting suggested area restaurants could provide food at Clark.

However, according to DeBurgh, in order to make a commitment with a food company, they must meet the following requirements: they must have a valid health department certificate, they must hold a harmless agreement, hazard analysis, they must deliver and lastly they must meet the cost point, or the budget.

Environmental/Vegetarian Club member, Jenny Schellbach was glad about the fact that DeBurgh and food services are trying to enhance cafeteria  food.

“I’m glad they’re trying to improve school food because school food in general needs to be improved,” commented sophomore Jenny Schellbach.

During the meeting, students raised issues such as changing Pizza Hut to a different company.  They also suggested different toppings such as cheese and mushrooms. Also, a few students insisted on having fat -free salad dressings.

DeBurgh explained that it is possible to purchase most foods that Clark students desire, as long as they sell enough and the food is “financially possible.”

It is up to the students to take a stand and make the choices necessary in creating a satisfying lunch meal.
