(March 30, 2001) -- After three weeks of preparation, the Associated Student Body presented a week of theme days and activities called Spirit Week.

The finale of the week is the talent show, which is planned for  today.  According to ASB advisor Kristina Provost, “We have a variety of performances this year: guitarists, dancers, singers and a rapper.”

Spirit Week started with country western day, where students wore jeans and plaid shirts.  With decade day on Tuesday, students had more freedom with their dress.

Even after the announcement on which decades were acceptable, freshman Nathan Mendelsohn decided to dress differently.  He wore a tag that read, “Pre-cambrian era.  I’m a lobster.”

The next day, Mendelsohn wore a coconut bra with a “straw” skirt.  The Hawaiian spirit prompted students to wear tropical colors on Wednesday.  The first year we had Hawaiian day, “it started snowing at lunch.  So if it’s going to be Hawaiian day, we joke that it’s going to snow,” assistant principal Joan Shoff commented.

At Wednesday’s snack activity, junior Greg Manukyan took first place in the lemon eating contest. He said he had to walk away because his teeth were hurting.

At lunch, three teams competed in an obstacle course.  The blue team rounded the trash can in the egg walk in third place, but after the balloon shaving and crowd search, the blue team pulled in first.  The course consisted of an egg walk, a balloon shaving station and a crowd search.

On Thursday, during snack, ten donuts were dangled above students’ heads.  Michael Aure’s donut fell into his lap.  After a few attempts, the donuts dropped to the ground while he kneeled to eat the last bits of his donut. He won.  A couple students competed in the arm-wrestling match.

At the pie-eating contest on Tuesday, Vladimir Vediniapine was one of the 5 competitors.  He said, “This is the second time I’ve done it, so I’ve had experience, even though I lost.” The winner was junior, Frank Chander.

The first tryout of the talent show took place on March 22.  Judging the competitors were Ms. Nash, Ms. Provost, ASB president Raffi Bardakjian, and the four class presidents.

During the practices, friends sat in the amphitheatre to encourage each other, such as sophomore Elizabeth Zardaryan.  She said, “I think the talent show will be great and my friends have worked very hard at tutorials and after-school.”
