Clark lacks alternatives

(February 20, 2002) -- Well, Valentine’s Day has come and gone and the sweet aroma of love is still drifting through the air… except for our Clark seniors, that is. It is the sour stench of fearful anticipation that burns their nostrils on this happy day for they have turned in their university applications and are now awaiting their results. Fear is not uncommon for seniors; they are just entering adulthood and planning for their future. However, this fear is intensified for Clark seniors in particular because of all the extra obstacles they have to overcome on their way to college.

One main concern that seniors have is the small amount of extracurricular activities provided by the school. Most universities see involvement in after school programs as a definite plus on a student’s transcript, but we “Clarkians” simply don’t have that advantage.

It is true that we are one of the few schools in the area that participates in the FIRST Robotics competition, and not many schools partake in the Mock Trial competitions. But that is just about it when it comes to extracurricular programs at Clark. These are good programs, but just two aren’t enough to impress the universities our seniors are capable of getting into.

Since Clark is still young, this problem is probably not going last very long. In time this wonderful school of ours will have an Honor Society and almost everything else that the other high schools have. Who knows, we might even get our own sports team and music department! Unfortunately, until this change comes, we, the students of Clark, have to do our very best (as always) and get the best grades possible in order to get to the colleges we want to get to.
