(December 20, 2002) -- A new crosswalk at the school’s entrance on New York Ave. should be completed when students come back from their winter vacation in January.

To reduce the danger of potential accidents, the City of Glendale is installing this crosswalk. According   to Traffic Engineer Omar Abutaleb, the school requested the crosswalk for students’ safety.

Abutaleb said, “After we got the request from Clark, we felt that putting in a crosswalk was a good idea for the city and for Clark.” Abutaleb said that a comprehensive crosswalk system would prevent accidents and protect pedestrians.

According to Abutaleb, this project includes ten other main streets in Glendale and La Crescenta such as Colorado Ave., Glendale Ave., Wilson and Pennsylvania Aves. The project began Nov. 20, and the underground work, which means the basic preparation for the main construction, is being done on New York Ave. and several other places.

The new system, which is called the “in-roadway warning light system,” is not an ordinary crosswalk. When a pedestrian presses a button to cross the street, road lights flash along the street to warn drivers. Then, as the pedestrian crosses the street, the pedestrian sign will continue flashing until the signal changes.

Sophomore Kwang Park said, “I cross on New York Ave., and I always thought that it was too dangerous for students. I think, by putting a new crosswalk, it would help students a lot by making it safer and faster for them.”

According to Abutaleb, the whole project for the city is scheduled to be finished in January, and the cost for each crosswalk is about $30,000.
