School changes mode of recylcling

The Recycling Club was cut this year due to a new system that Clark will now be using to dispose of recyclable materials.

Prior to this decision, students in Recycling Club gathered recyclable materials from around campus, which were later haled off by the City. According to Principal Doug Dall, trash management costs the school $15,000 a month.

Now the school will use the services of Consolidated waste who will recycle materials, in turn cutting the hauling fee by $4,000. The trash is to be taken from the school to a sorting facility where the materials will be separated and recycled. Since the club members sorted trash beforehand, they began doing the job for the company.

Many students are participating in the annual Reflections and Spotlight contests.  Reflections is competition open to all students at a PTA/PTSA school.  This year’s theme, “A Different Kind of Hero,” can be portrayed in literature, musical composition, photography, or visual arts.

“I am pretty confident that I can achieve something with my artwork this year,” junior Jessica Choi said.  Her piece will be judged based on artistic merit, creativity, and interpretation of the theme.  Clark students often reach the county level in this competition, according to Photography teacher Bill Saul.

Along with the National Reflections Contest, all Clark students are also eligible to enter the Spotlight Awards, sponsored by the Los Angeles Music Center Educational Division.  Students who participate may submit entries in singing, dancing, two-dimensional design, and photography.  Saul is encouraging his photography students to enter.

“It is a wonderful opportunity for students to organize work,” he said.  “In this day and age, it is an easy and efficient way to enter a contest.  In the past, Clark students have been successful in this.”

School purchases new PA system

The speaker system used to play music and make speeches during school-wide assemblies recently blew out after a four-year run of operation, so ASB has replaced it with a new system.

The speaker system used to play music and make speeches during school-wide assemblies recently blew out after a four-year run of operation, so ASB has replaced it with a new system.

The top-of-the-line audio system, which cost approximately $5000, was set up last week at lunch, where it had its first test run.  Aside from having state-of-the-art microphones and disc-reading capabilities, the system comes stocked with effects like echo and reverb, which simulates an enclosed room’s natural sound-reflecting quality. All of these features are housed in a relatively compact black cube that sits at the floor of the amphitheater.

According to ASB Director of Activities, Sandra Belderian, nearly all ASB staff are trained on how to use the system.
