The infamous chimes - Salman Farooq

Mrs. Melone settles in to using new chimes

In December, Principal Doug Dall and Senior Administrative Secretary Barbara Melone decided that Melone would use chimes in place of her infamous phrase, “Please excuse the interruption.”

Physics teacher Dennis Henderson wrote an e-mail to Dall in November saying the introduction was too long.  This was brought up at the November staff meeting, and most teachers agreed, so Melone replaced it with the chimes followed by “Announcement.”

Melone and Dall attended a workshop in December where the speaker used chimes to get the audience’s attention.  Because Melone liked the chimes, Dall bought some for her for Christmas. Meloen has used them since then.

“Though I think the cimes get somewhat annoying, they are good attention-grabbers and help me wake up in the morning,” said junior Tanya Diaz.

Clark Expo held for second year

“Free hot dogs and lemonade!” accentuates Lilit Vardanian on the upcoming Clark Expo  Feb. 12, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Cark will showcase all aspects of the school with representatives from a variety of academic departments, clubs and other special events to show new students what Clark is about.

Engineering Club adviser Gerald Gruss, for instance, will be to explain the bridge building contest held every year. Other clubs will set up poseters and other visuals to show what they do.

This is only the second time Clark has hosted an expo, though this year there will be no rock-climbing wall. However, there will be food vendors include an ice cream station.  Anyone is welcomed and everyone is encouraged to come and experience Clark from a different point of view.

“Last year’s expo was awesome. Free food, free drinks and some free rock climbing,” said senior Illya Williams. “How can anyone say no to that?”

KATS Club goes to Science Center

Forty-seven KATS club members took a trip to the California Science Center to see the Body Works exhibit Jan. 13. The trip started with students watching a short IMAX movie on the human body and how it works. They proceeded to the museum exhibit containing human bodies with actual muscle tissue, body organs and bones. Many students said they enjoyed the skeletons; as for some it was a new and unusual experience.

“It was very weird and interesting at the same time, because they had an actual mother with her unborn child still in the stomach,” said freshman Angela Azevedo. According to KATS club advisor Judy Sanzo, the trip was designed to help students learn about the human body and see how cigarette smoking affects people.

The exhibit contained lungs that had shriveled because of cigarette smoke and hearts that enlarged from all the harmful chemicals. “Since the exhibit was only here for a short time, I was pleased to have been given the opportunity to go,” said freshman Luke Arathoon.
