(November 21, 2006) -- On Nov. 8 about 20 seniors were called into the office to receive information on their nominations for the Elk’s Scholarship—an annual national scholarship sponsored by the Elk’s Lodge, a men’s service club with an extremely strong chapter in Glendale. Students were nominated by Clark counseling clerk Becky Bondy, counselors Linda Doll and Karen Carlson, ROP counselor Valencia Watson and Assistant Principal Joan Shoff based on the criteria given to the school by the organization.

Students will be evaluated (in order of importance) on leadership qualities, high SAT scores and GPAs.

Any student can apply for the scholarship after filling out a 21-page application; the nominated students, however, will be given the opportunity to fill out their application with the guidance and help of long—time member of the Elk’s lodge and former high school counselor Jack Wright. Wright has been working with Clark Magnet students since 2002.  With his help, students will have the advice of someone who has been working with the scholarship for 13 years.

Wright said he believes that only the best of students should apply for the scholarship. Every applicant is guaranteed a minimum of $50 (which simply requires filling out the 21 pages); however, Wright is more interested in the students who believe they are fit to compete on a national level. After the district level is done, highly qualified applicants will move up the ladder from district, to county, to state and lastly to the national level.

“It’s an extremely competitive scholarship,” Wright said. “I really want the best rather than having students turn themselves off.”

Wright said he would rather volunteer personal time to help the best students fill out an application successfully.

Students interested in applying can find the application at the Elk’s website, www.elks.org.
