Floral Design is a class that teaches students design principles and techniques in floral art. The students are expected to recognize the artistic benefits and history of floral design, classify and identify flowers and plants used, use temperature, preservatives, and cutting techniques to increase keeping quality, and identify tools, chemicals, and equipment used in floral design.
Floral design activities are tied to holidays and so far this year, the students have created: homecoming mums, Christmas wreaths, pumpkin floral arrangements, and recently, in honor of prom, boutonnieres with fresh roses. “The students have been doing a three week project planning a wedding,” Floral Design and Agriculture teacher Katie Childers said.
Students who are interested in getting a job in interior design or becoming a florist should think about taking this class to get them started on their futures.
“This course will assist students interested in wedding planning, interior design or even working in a flower shop,” Childers said.
This course is also valuable for those who see floral design as an extension of the artistic process.
“Students should take floral design to learn to arrange fresh and silk flowers properly into a unique piece of art,” Childers said.
