There are a lot of ways kids can help out the community. Some kids recycle or do highway clean ups. Other kids volunteer at nursing homes or help at the library. Some kids decide to help in other more unique ways, like helping the up coming youth.  These are just a few ways that Bandera kids can give back to their communities.

Bandera High School students have been participating in the Boys and Girls Club Spurs Youth Basketball League each spring. This is a league for kids of any age to play and work on their basketball skills. Most of the kids who play are in middle school and elementary school. Some BHS students take the opportunity that the league offers to be referees for the kids. This is an offset and unique way students can give back and help the community.

A few students from BHS help referee the Spurs Youth Basketball League. There are quite a few different reasons why kids decide to take time off their busy schedules and do this.

“I enjoy helping the kids become better at basketball,” junior Wesley Overly said.

Other students focus on different aspects.

“I love basketball and it’s a fun way to make money,” freshman Marissa Godbey said.

Some students enjoy the money side of the deal, like than sophomore Blake Keller.

“Da Money,” is all Keller had to say as to his motivation to referee.

There are also some good life lessons to be learned helping the young kids and being responsible for them.

“I gained more confidence refereeing,” Godbey said.

The student referees are not the only ones who gain from the youth basketball league.

“I think the kids learn to work as a team, “Overly said.
