The BHS 7 on 7 team's main goal is to ready the players for next fall's Friday night games. - Lauren Elizondo

Seven on seven is a summer football league that was started to keep the students practicing until the next season, so that they don’t lose any of the skills that they acquired in the fall. The coaches hope that when two a days come back around in August, the players’ minds and bodies are ready for the physical challenge. As junior Tyler Faris said, “Spring football is to get us in shape and get us used to the offense and defense for the upcoming season.”
BHS has fielded a team for the past couple of years and has a history of qualifying for the summer state tournament, held yearly at Texas A&M in College Station. This year’s teams’ first meeting was last week and there was a good turn out, with anywhere from 25 to 30 players, and there seem to be more joining in every day.
This year’s coach is former varsity player and senior Sean Scott, who is taking over from Rocky Hubble. “Since I have played 7 on 7 for 2 years as a player, I know what it is like to be in their (the student’s) position, which makes it easier for them because I hope I will be more understanding,” Scott said. Senior Davis Morrow’s dad Clay Morrow is assisting Scott.
On Monday night, the team opened its season with a win and a loss against the Hondo varsity and junior varsity teams respectively. “The ultimate goal is for the players to not have any lag-time at the start of the season,” Scott said. “I don’t want them to lose their hands during the season like some players can.”
With practices already scheduled for Mondays and Wednesdays, and a series of local games and tournaments throughout the summer, it will be easy for this year’s team to begin bonding. “I enjoy spending as much time as I can with the boys ‘cause we bond so well,” Faris said. “We really are like brothers.”
