Ticket sales are over. Tuxes are rented. Limo reservations are made. Junior Prom is only a few nerve-racking days away…unless you’re not going.

For the last four weeks, I’ve been harassed about my decision not to go to Junior Prom. I have survived threats, avoided bribes, and flouted parental guidance to finally escape the JP trap. With ticket sales ending last week, there is absolutely no way to be dragged into going.

For most students, Junior Prom is just another step towards adulthood. It’s a right of passage: the first opportunity to attend a formal school dance.

For me, Junior Prom is a waste of well-earned cash. I can’t think of a whole lot of memories that are worth a hundred-plus dollars on a single night. Maybe skydiving, but not a dance. Let’s take a look at the cost effect of an “incredible night of memories.”

Junior Prom Ticket: $65

Tux Rental/New Dress: $100-$150

Limo Rental: $55

Pictures: $25

Boutonniere/ Corsage: $15

Everlasting Memories: Not priceless, but $235

Even if you skip the formalities and go cheap on the dress, there’s still going to be huge price tag on the end of Junior Prom.

Here are the weekend plans and cost analysis for someone that wants to have fun this upcoming weekend without emptying their piggy bank (or parents’ checking account).

Matinee Movie Ticket: $7

My own clothes: $0

Gas for Car: $10

Digital Pictures: $0

Mongolian BBQ: $10

Endless Night of Fun (and Super Smash Bro. Brawl): $27

Junior Prom is a once in a lifetime event. But there are a lot of one-time occurrences I could do without. Death, brain surgery, paralysis, divorce are just a few of a long list.

It is possible to skip the pre-prom stress and the inevitable drama of prom night. I personally hope everyone has a great experience Saturday night, but I’m going to make sure my prom-less night is one to remember.
