When you think about floats, you probably imagine a huge and decorated mobile type of display that has something flashy to it. You also probably imagine that it has some people on it dressed in a certain theme. That isn’t the case for San Benito High School’s Winter Homecoming.

Winter Homecoming is the second homecoming event that SBHS hosts in the entire school year. Winter Homecoming coincides with the homecoming basketball game. The entire campus celebrates homecoming throughout the entire week with themed dress up days for each day.

Winter Homecoming is put on and organized by the Rally Club. Along with the dress-up days they have “noon time activities” organized for the entire week that takes place during lunch as part of class competitions. The entire homecoming week is topped off by the homecoming game on the Friday night of that week. Another event, known as the homecoming rally, takes place during the school day.

During the rally, students gather in the Mattson Gym and compete in class competitions and view performances from various dance groups and the band. One thing unique to this rally is the exhibition of the “mini-floats.”

Mini-floats are made by various clubs and classes and revolve around a preset theme that is chosen by Rally Club. The mini-float is made on a shopping cart of any size that is borrowed from various stores around Hollister. This event gives participants a chance to get creative with how they handle their float due to the difference of size when compared to the Fall Homecoming floats.

This year’s theme was “Balers Go to the Cinema.” With this theme, participants choose a movie or type of movie and build their float around that film. Films range from Pokemon Club doing the 90’s Nick film, “Good Burger,” the seniors with the theme of “Old School Disney.”

Winter Homecoming can be a seen as a chance for a class or club to show their creative side and school spirit in order to have a good time with classmates.
