Have you ever found yourself at the computer and it feels like hours and hours, but you just can’t seem to get off? Well, some students at San Benito High School have themselves caught in that situation. A lot of teenagers these days are spending way too much time on social networking sites such as Myspace and Facebook.
“People spend way too much time on Facebook and Myspace, it’s causing unnecessary drama because people don’t know what to do with their lives anymore and just create rumors,” said freshman, Hayley Ashford. “People can’t even talk on the phone anymore and Myspace isn’t helping, and now people are losing all of their social skills.
Although Ashford has a Myspace account, she said she tries not to go on it too much and likes to update it every once in a while. She says she has a Myspace so that she can talk to family and friends she doesn’t normally get to talk to and she likes to share pictures, too.
Ashford said she doesn’t recommend that younger users use Myspace because they don’t know all the precautions about being safe and not adding people that they don’t know. Many kids get themselves caught up in drama because of Myspace and also get put into tough situations that they shouldn’t have to be in.
“People need to be more aware with the privacy aspect of it. There are stalkers and predators that roam the site non-stop and if someone adds you and you don’t know who they are, do not accept their request. People could be lying about their age, appearance and where they are from and people need to be aware of that,” said Ashford.
Senior, Sam Klauer said Myspace is good for talking to friends and sharing photos. She doesn’t agree with the amount of time some users spend on it though. “At times, it’s fun to go on if you use your time sparingly, but it’s just a waste if you go on 24/7 and it’s kind of pathetic,” Klauer said. She thinks people should be doing better things, like being more active and hanging out with friends. Klauer also has an account on facebook, which she said is a more “mature” site with less drama than Myspace. She said the one bad thing about all social networking sites are the privacy issues and drama.
Social networking site users at SBHS suggest that students not get caught up in the drama, don’t add people they don’t know and go on the sites sparingly.
