There are two new student teachers in the English department this term at Roseville High School. Janae Steyskal works for English teachers Dean Gadway and Michelle Cole. Sara Schopfer works for English teachers Amy Shishido and Denise Weis.

Schopfer is a graduate student at Sacramento State University and is currently working on obtaining her teaching credential.  One of the requirements for earning her credential is student teaching.

“She is scheduled to teach my second period CP English 10 class until the end of the semester,” said Shishido. “She also works with English teacher Denise Weis on teaching CP English 12.”

Before starting her job at RHS, Schopfer taught at a middle school.

“Before this semester I was student teaching at Wilson C. Riles Middle School,” said Schopfer.  “I taught seventh grade English there.”

Schopfer received her BA in English from Sonoma State and is a graduate of Colfax High School.  So far she has enjoyed her teaching at RHS.

“I have some talented, amicable and charismatic students, who never fail to make me laugh, enlighten me and teach me,” said Schopfer. “The other teachers and staff have also been very helpful to me as well and I am excited about the things I get to teach this semester.”

Schopfer has learned a lot of new things about teaching since she first arrived at RHS.

“Seventh graders are much different than high school students, so I am learning a lot of new things that will help me become a better teacher for high school,” said Schopfer. “Both RHS and Riles Middle School have great campuses, wonderful students and helpful staff.”

Schopfer hopes to return to RHS after obtaining her teaching credential.

Steyskal, like Schopfer, is assigned to teach for the entire spring term. In addition to teaching Gadway’s English 10 class, she is also assigned to teach two sections of English 11 for English teacher Michelle Cole.

“I think she is fantastic,” said Cole. “She’s smart, organized and really cares about the kids.”

Steyskal enjoys being at RHS because of the positive atmosphere.

“I love it here,” said Steyskal. “The staff is all so nice and I am learning so much about teaching and all the aspects [that] surround it. The students have been amazing to teach and I look forward to coming to school everyday.”

Steyskal graduated from Casa Roble High School and went to Sierra College from there. She later graduated from Sacramento State and is now attending National University for her credential.

“It is very different here at RHS because I not only teach, but I also have to plan and grade papers,” said Steyskal. “I enjoy teaching and striving to make my classes enjoyable for students.”
