This year, Roseville High School’s leadership class is looking to change the way that freshmen feel about the school through a new biweekly event called Freshman Fridays. This event is for freshmen only and can range from activities such as a donut eating contest and gummy bear toss, to holding a freshman movie night.

“We’re trying to do new things each time to keep it interesting,” said senior Kirsten Coronas, a leadership student in charge of Freshmen Fridays.

A freshmen-specific activity like this has not been available in previous school years, but is something the leadership class would like to see stay. It was organized with the purpose to help freshmen unify as a class and to help them feel connected with RHS.

Coronas says that it was after the amount of class spirit shown at freshmen orientation that the leadership class wanted to take that energy and harness it, not letting the freshmen class shrink away from being an active part of RHS.

The previous event, freshmen movie night, scheduled for August 28th was indefinitely postponed due to lack of attendance, as well as coinciding rally day. However, it will be on a later date and be open for all classes to attend.

“I have these kids come up to me and say something like ‘Hey, we didn’t have this when I was a freshman.’ So I think it’s a really good thing for the freshmen to have,” said Coronas.

At the first Freshmen Friday attendees participated in a donut eating game and were given free otter pops. Leadership students walked around campus spreading the word for all freshmen to attend.

“It was a small percentage of freshmen who went, but they were having fun,” said Coronas. “So in a way it was a success and yet, we want the future ones to be better.”

Freshmen Fridays take place twice a month during both lunches and require a freshmen pass or an identification card for admittance.

“All of the events are fun,” said freshman Haydon Hall.

Hall participated in an event called the dizzy race, where two competitors hold one end of a baseball bat to their heads while the other is planted on the ground. Competitors then run around the bat in a tight circle ten times and then run back and forth across the stage in front of the library.

Hall finished first, and obtained a bag of candy as a prize, while members of the Tiger Link Crew began handing out otter pops.

“Honestly, I think they should keep it, because it’s really fun, and you get an otter pop,” said Hall.
